Firsts: Modern Rites of Passage for Young Women

    By Heather

Many countries and cultures have formal ceremonies that mark the passage from girl to woman.  These rites of passage, however, are not so obvious to some women growing up in the United States.  Some formal rites of passage you may be familiar with are the Jewish Bat Mitzvah, the Hispanic Quinceanera, or the Catholic Confirmation.  But what if you don’t participate in one of these formal ceremonies?  Do you miss out on important things?  This website aims to catch those of you who feel like your coming-of-age invitation was lost in the mail.  Although there may be no balloons or cake or VIPs, in the immortal words of Neil Diamond, “Girl, you’ll be a woman soon.”  You should be able to see a little of yourself in some of the rites that we chose.  Remember: “It’s the journey, not the destination that’s important.”

    Declaring Independence!

Have a license, credit card, and cell phone?? You have a job. You’re on the way to self-sufficiency. These are all “firsts” that show that you are on the way to being on your own. Soon to be 18? That means you can vote in the next election. You can have a voice in your world.

BUT…it is not so simple. Each of these “Firsts” demands some responsibility on your part. You will now need to pay attention to the laws, to understand and pay the bills, and to realize that a job requires that you show. Yes, you do have some rights if you find yourself coming face-to-face with the police. Going from child to adult requires you to understand that these new freedoms bear some responsibilities along with the greater independence.
